Nicole Scherzinger Faces Backlash For Post-Election Social Media Post
UPDATED with Scherzinger’s apology: Nicole Scherzinger, the previous Pussycat Doll and X Issue decide who not too long ago stunned the New York theater neighborhood by handing over one of many best-reviewed Broadway performances of the season, unleashed one other revelation this week that isn’t being so well-received.
Scherzinger, thought-about a high Tony contender for her starring position in Sundown Blvd., set off a social media backlash after responding favorably to a post-Trump-victory Instagram publish by Russell Model, the comic, Christian convert and topic of a London police investigation on sexual assault allegations.
The day after Tuesday’s election, Model posted {a photograph} of himself carrying a MAGA-like purple baseball cap inscribed with the phrases “Make Jesus First Once more.”
“The place do I get this hat!!!?” Scherzinger replied on Model’s IG web page in a since-deleted remark.
Following on-line backlash, she shared an apology Friday on her Instagram Story, “I deeply apologize for the harm brought on by my latest engagement with some social media posts. Once I commented on these posts, I made the error of not realizing that they may very well be simply interpreted as being politically associated and I apologize to anybody who understandably reached that conclusion.
“Many presumptions are being drawn, which don’t replicate who I’m, what I stand for, or who I voted for,” she added partially. “Lots of the marginalized communities feeling harm and anxious by the outcomes of the presidential election are folks I care about most. I stand with them, as I at all times have all through my life and profession. If me, that.”
Though the preliminary remark from Scherzinger – who performs Norma Desmond within the Jamie Lloyd-directed reimagining of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical – made no particular reference to Trump or MAGA, it has largely been interpreted as no less than a tacit endorsement. She supported Barack Obama in 2008 and has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQIA+ neighborhood, although she has spoken out in opposition to abortion.
In a typical response this week, an X commenter referred to as The Broadway Slasher wrote, “Nicole Scherzinger’s profession has been saved alive and afloat virtually EXCLUSIVELY through the pockets of her LGBTQIA+ followers for the final 15 years when NOBODY ELSE needed to see or hear her…This can be a betrayal.”
“In recognition of the passing of Nicole Scherzinger’s Tony probabilities, the St. James theatre has introduced they are going to be dimming their lights on November 7, 2024,” tweeted OnStage Weblog.
Wrote one other commenter, “Nicole Scherzinger actually thought it was an awesome concept to return out as a Trump supporter? When she’s actually on the verge of a Tony nomination. Broadway is run by homosexual and trans folks. After a flop try of a solo profession, she lastly discovered her area of interest and ruins it.”
Scherzinger has been mum for the reason that controversy started, as have reps for Sundown Blvd., although Deadline hears that would change. We’ll replace this publish with any developments.
