Dad’s Army star John Clegg has died aged 90.

The actor was best known for his role in the BBC sitcom, and as playing Gunner ‘Paderewski’ Graham in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum across 56 episodes.

He ‘died peacefully in care’, an announcement read, adding: ‘He will be missed by all his friends from the theatre, his friends in Chichester and his family.’

A private funeral will be held on August 29 in West Sussex.

Clegg also held roles in 70s series Hogg’s Back and as Clifford Howes in Crossroads: Kings Oak.

More recently, he played an unnamed elderly man in 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Author and Bafta member Morris Bright paid tribute on X, writing: ‘We is very sorry indeed to hear that La Di Da Gunner Graham, actor John Clegg, has gone to that great concert party in the sky, aged 90.

‘He certainly was one of the boys who entertained us.’

Fans have also paid tribute, with @jeremybhaines writing: ‘Very sad news indeed that the Actor John Clegg sadly passed away RIP Sir.’

@NiceThingsShow said: ‘RIP to lah-do-dah Gunner Graham, the actor John Clegg. A good innings from an actor who was always a strong and stable presence on screen.’

Clegg was married to co-star Mavis Pugh, 20 years his senior, until her death in 2006.

Together hey starred in You Rang, M’Lord? where she played Lady Lavender Southwick, and in 1972’s Are You Being Served?

According to MailOnline, Clegg gave a chat in 2017 titled ‘My Life as an Actor’, detailing his profession that started in drama college in London and included an encounter with Dame Judi Dench, who didn’t assume he was suited to taking part in conventional Shakespeare characters.
