Nevada earthquake shakes parts of California – NBC Los Angeles
A magnitude-5.5 earthquake Monday afternoon rattled elements of Nevada and California.
The earthquake at 3:08 p.m. was centered close to the central Nevada city of Yerington, about 60 miles southeast of Carson Metropolis and about 370 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Reasonable to sturdy shaking was reported in Sacramento, San Francisco, Reno, Carson Metropolis, Stockton and different areas.
The earthquake was adopted by a number of aftershocks, together with 5 of magnitude-3.0 and larger.
Some earthquakes are adopted by a bigger earthquake, by which case the primary quake would then be known as a foreshock. For instance, the magnitude-9.1 Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011 was preceded by a magnitude-7.3 foreshock two days earlier.
Aftershock charges lower over time, however can proceed for days, weeks, months and years.
