A partir de ese momento, Brasil se adueñó del mediocampo y llevó seguidamente peligro al arco defendido por Rafael Romo; pero tardó en adelantarse debido a sus propios errores, más que a las bondades defensivas de sus rivales.

Venezuela no se amilanó. Apenas iniciado el complemento emparejó la pizarra 1-1 y por momentos le robó el protagonismo. Por largos pasajes ambos intentaron insistentemente sacudir las redes.

A los 62 minutos, Brasil desperdició el penal. Vinicius Júnior fue derribado dentro del área, pero a la postre el ariete del Actual Madrid fue víctima de una atajada magistral de Romo para mantener la paridad.

La Verdeamarela quedó con 17 puntos de 30 posibles, provisionalmente en el tercer sitio de las eliminatorias del Mundial que coorganizarán Estados Unidos, México y Canadá.

“Creo que, respetando todas las valoraciones posibles, por todo lo que hicimos en el partido, merecíamos mejor suerte”, aseveró Dorival Junior. “Fue un partido bonito de ver, franco, abierto, prevaleciendo el mediocampo de ambos equipos. Espero que sigamos mejorando y creciendo, aunque Brasil mereció un mejor resultado”.

Venezuela, la única selección sudamericana que jamás ha disputado un Mundial, acumula 12 unidades. Está transitoriamente en el séptimo sitio, que otorga el derecho a disputar un repechaje intercontinental.

Los seis primeros se clasifican directamente al Mundial.

La Vinotinto venía de sumar dos derrotas y cuatro empates en sus anteriores seis compromisos. Apenas ha marcado cuatro goles en sus últimos siete partidos. Su último triunfo llegó en casa 3-0 ante Chile, el 17 de octubre de 2023.

Pero le ha robado dos empates a la Seleção.

Para el próximo choque de la eliminatoria, frente a Uruguay, Brasil no contará con el zaguero Vanderson, en tanto que por Venezuela estará ausente Alexander González, quien vio, la cartulina roja tras propinarle un manotazo en el rostro a Vinicius, que lo empujó por la espalda luego que el zaguero derribó al brasileño Gabriel Martinelli.

Leandro Cufré, quien dirigió el partido en sustitución de Fernando Batista —relegado a los palcos por acumulación de tarjetas amarillas en las dos pasadas fechas— lamentó que, cuando mejor jugaba su equipo y pudo hacer más, la expulsión de González condicionó el accionar.

Herrera y José Martínez, mediocampista del Corinthians, salieron con dolencias y van a ser evaluados. Cufré confió en que “no tengan ninguna lesión de gravedad y estén a disposición para el martes”.

“Siempre queda el sabor agridulce que se podía haber hecho más, pero como se presentó el partido también se pudo haber perdido”, reconoció Cufré. “Creo que es un punto muy valioso”, agregó Cufré.

El partido se disputó en el estadio Monumental de Maturín, en el extremo oriente de Venezuela.

El próximo martes, Venezuela visitará a Chile en Santiago y Brasil recibirá a Uruguay en Salvador.
